Several explosions have struck Brussels airport and the Metro system this morning, causing at least 13 deaths, reports Belgian media.
Two blasts tore through the departures area of Zaventem airport shortly after 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT). Just an hour later, an explosion hit Maalbeek Metro station, close to EU institutions. Both the metro system and airport have now been closed.
Belgian public broadcaster RTBF reported that shots were fired and there were shouts in Arabic shortly before the blasts at the airport. They believe the explosions at the airport were a “suicide attack”. All of this is leading people to classify the incidents as a coordinated terrorist attack. However, the local authorities have not been able to confirm that theory yet.
The blasts at the airport and metro station occurred four days after the arrest in Brussels of a suspect in the militant attacks in Paris that killed 130 people. Belgian police had been on alert for any reprisal action.
