Everybody knows about UK’s iconic red, posh-looking, public telephone booths. But beautiful and emblematic as they may be, they too are unable to stand the test of time. In a world dominated by smartphones, tablets and whatnot, they no longer serve much of a function. Sure, they still have their appeal, but in terms of utility, they are losing points.
So a New York-based startup called Bar Works Inc plans to give some of them a makeover. But not just any kind of makeover (they won’t take away the bright red paint we all know and love, don’t worry), but one that will transform the booths into tiny offices.
Their project, entitled “Pod Works” aims to equip the boxes with WiFi access, a printer and scanner, a 25-inch monitor, a wireless mouse, a plug powerbank and a hot drinks machine. “Pod Works” is aimed at entrepreneurs, and according to the company’s press release, a monthly subscription, with access to any box, anytime, costs £19.99.
“Entrepreneurs constantly on the move need a convenient, affordable and private place to work. Why should they sit in Starbucks or any other coffee bar when using one of our Pods will allow them to truly focus on their job before an important meeting or presentation at less than the price of two cups of coffee a week?”, says Bar Works CEO Jonathan Black.
