In a rather unexpected turn of events, Portugal won tonight the 2016 UEFA European Championship with an 1-0 overtime victory over France. This win marks Portugal’s first major football title.
All hope was lost when Cristiano Ronaldo went off injured in the first half, was taken out on a stretcher and could not return to the game. He had injured his left knee in the 7th minute after France midfielder Dimitri Payet clattered into him.
After treatment, he asked to be put back into the game but could not keep up because of his injury. Still, he limped onto the pitch to encourage his teammates and the supporters at the start of both periods of extra time.
The substitute Eder was tonight’s hero. He won the Euro Cup for Portugal by scoring a brilliant goal in 109th minute, after an extended, tiresome match locked at 0-0 for the longest time. He fired a low, right-foot shot that broke France’s heart and crushed its confidence of winning the European Championship.
